My art blog… what’s on my easel… daily painting… sketches… digital stuff …photography…challenges…and a bit of poetry

Days go by, take each day as it comes. Suddenly realized that I haven’t posted in a while. Actually, haven’t been that productive.

On the more positive side I finally put out some oils and cold wax.  Haven’t really painted in that media  in almost a year.  It was a great feeling, promised myself that I would finish a painting and submit for review on Cold Wax Academy. Yay, I did! Analyzing a painting in progress, dealing with aspects of composition using a special guide, and then fixing the problems. Another surprise. I enrolled in a beginner course in writing poetry.  A great course run out of California Institute of the Arts. Quite a challenge. Learning a lot, but  poet I am not!

On the left a small poem and on the bottom  2 versions of my painting. On the left painting in progress on the right the finished version.

Learning more layouts with elementor! YAY!

Dark of Day

3:00 AM,
5:00AM,
Phone vibrates,
Familiar ugly noise,
In the next few minutes
alerts  expected
in your area.
Toilet and wait,
Sirens
1.30 minutes to
Concrete safe room,
WhatsApp  “everyone OK”
boom or silence,
Shot down
Day continues

For some reason, probably political, this poem was not accepted. I did some editing, took out some words: sirens, saferoom, alerts, shot down. After deleting some words it was accepted. I am sure it was a bot!

Just wanted to describe a situation. The feeling. No mention of missile, Yemen, Iron Dome.

  1. Carol! Thank you for sharing your poem. As you know, I saw it previously as I’d joined you in taking the course in writing poetry. I’d be curious to see your revised version as well if I can find it online in one of the course pages. As it stands here, I am struck by the starkness and strength of so many of the word choices: familiar ugly alerts toilet wait sirens concrete safe boom silence shot. Its terse staccato delivery packs punch.

Thank you for posting both the work in progress and finished versions of “salt sea sand.” WOW! Captivating composition, texture, and contrasts. Your judicious use of deep red is very effective.

And I’m impressed with your learning more layouts with elementor!

    Altogether well done, Carol!

    1. Thank you for your feedback on the poem. Most of those words are missing in the edited version. I posted in the Module 2 discussion forum.
Thanks for your feedback on the painting, Yes I feel maybe some more red is needed to make a POP!
Hope my painting gets into the review this coming Wednesday!
Wordpress + elementor is a challenge, My granddaughter Mor, is my WordPress mentor, but she was busy this week so I took up the challenge! She added the dotted line that separates the poem and my blog description.
Thanks again for all the feedback and encouragement!

  2. I see all those words in your poem, so maybe the bot changed its mind. Thank you for sharing. A life I cannot imagine living… Glad to see your paintings! I know how much you enjoy that medium. Such a contrast in blues between the two pieces. Layers of same painting? Two different days? Different moods? Maybe same painting from what you wrote?

    1. You see all the words all because this is the unedited poem. The two paintings are the same., scraped back added new layers. Really did big changes trying to make the painting work!
Always appreciate your feedback. Be well!

  3. Incredible poem. thank you for sharing. I can only imagine between the lines. Love you painting.

    1. Hi Kay! Thanks so much for your feedback.. Sometimes it feels like the un-normal is normal. and then we think what if there wasn’t an iron_dome!

  4. Amazing poem!!!! It puts me there…in the room…. You are incredible!

And how wonderful to see you working in cold wax and oils again! Yahoooooo! Xo

    1. So glad that you could feel the poem. Words have always been a big challenge. Yes, getting into the mess is releasing. So appreciative for your feedback!

    1. Thanks Naomi, very good description of what I wanted to convey in the poem. Thanks again for the great Shabbat eve!

  7. סבתוש שלי,
משוררת או לא – הצלחת להעביר את החוויה בצורה חיה.
תמשיכי לעשות וללמוד את מה שאת אוהבת ♥

    1. Thanks Mor, I am happy that my poem came across! I am having fun with the lessons…..very challenging. Thanks for all your help!

  8. Thanks for your feedback. Both are the same painting, just at different stages. The one on the right/bottom , depending if you are looking from a computer or mobile device, is the finished state.
    Which I may tweak. Brachot!
