Possible Solution

Sometimes there are days, that when going into the studio, you just don’t know what to do. Of course there are lots of WIPS that need attention, that will be for another day. After finding some cards that had prompts and the letters BP I finally figured that it was from an online workshop that I had taken way back in 2020 with Joan Fullerton. I recall this workshop really helped me get into the world of abstraction.

Went to my folder and I found a wealth of material. Since I am branching out into mixed media and smaller formats and sketchbooks got the idea to go back and do some of the exercises. Had to improvise but that’s good.

OK nothing to write home about, was/is a good solution to what to do and to re-learn lots of tech ideas.

    1. Thank you Naomi! Who knows in these exercises what is going to come out! That’s the fun part!

  1. How exciting to see you blogging. Was happy to know you are fine and making art. I think of you often as I too am revisiting my work done in Ireland. Please add me to your blog recipient list.

    1. So nice to hear from you. I also have to go back to look what I did, almost a year ago. Getting back to blogging, and pushing my self is a way to help me cope with all the chaos that surround me. I will add you to my list. Love your “rust” series!

  2. Carol, fun to hear the backstory of what got you moving in your studio after entering with a feeling of just-don’t-know-what-to-do. I appreciated your self-commentary, i.e. “OK nothing to write home about” and “a good solution to what to do and to re-learn lots of tech ideas”—helpful to be privy to your approach and reflections. Do you recall what prompts you followed here?

The milky gelatinous egg sac feel gave way to something less defined, more complex.

    1. Thanks so much for your feed back.. The main part of the exercises are turning the work 90 after each prompt, and the choices of color, 2 colors , black, white and buff. Really simple prompts like activating the canvas with graphite pencil with writing or pretend writing, do it again smaller scale, draw numbers in groups with a colored pencil. etc. You can make up your own rules. Anything is Kosher.

  3. What I would write home about is the visually textured, not physically, and the way the colors and shapes whisper over one another in this work. I haven’t seen you use green very much, or at least I am noticing it for the first time. I also think your changes make a stronger composition of connected marks, a less “floaty”feel. I like that a lot!

    1. Thanks so much for your feedback. I really love how others see my work. I really picked my colors randomly. Most of the exercises use 2 colors + black and white and sometimes buff. There are others from using a colored pencil or oil pastel etc. I think I could have waited longer before going into the edit stage. Very hard to photograph greys and neutrals the greys are more in tense!

  4. ooooh what a lovely way to find inspiration on a day where it’s needed! You’ve reminded me that I have little notebooks filled with coursework thoughts from the past. Definitely worth mining for gold!

I adore all your abstracts and would know your style anywhere. Something soft and chalky and mysterious about everything you create. Yum!

  5. I really blush at your comments! Thanks you so much! I have folders of most all my workshops and tons of exercises to redo! Just have to give myself a good push and shove! I am so grateful that I can blog and reach out to all my artist friends from across the world.

  6. איזה כיף שאת תמיד מוצאת דרכים חדשות ליצירה. אוהבת לקרוא על מה שקורה לך בסטודיו!

  7. I love the soft, washy colors and the wonderful messy marks. There is a rhythm that is just a little, off-beat. That keeps you looking. The textures are so engaging to me. Beautiful “re” learning! Bravo!

  8. Thank you Sheila. Love your feedback, ” rhythm that is just a bit, off-beat” Hope you are doing well!
    Brachot!

  9. So good to hear from you! Yes, moving forward, at least trying. Thanks for dropping in! Hope all is well with you all!

  10. Carol, I am wondering if your site got hacked, received a very strange email. I could forward it to you if you want me to. I don’t think you should click on the link in the email though, if I do.
