Scribble a Landscape

New Year

The time has come around

not feeling happy

joyous.

Just going with

the usual motions.

Deep sense of sorrow

abandonment

loss

thinking

just a 1 hour drive

a nightmare!

Yet, in a

few hours

I will be joining family

always a happy time!

Bringing apple pie!

Just going with

the usual motions.

Poem

Written on eve of Rosh HaShana

Self explanatory!

Week one assignment

Scribble a landscape. Go out in nature and with tool “scribble” scribble what you feel about the space, presence in the space, not just view, what is the weather, How to draw air? Find lines, shapes, think about scale.

Use any dry or wet medium.

First 4 images are in an A5 sketchbook. Used graphite pencils + large water soluble graphite stick. Use of eraser as a tool and finger smudging.

The last image, shadows, is a large sheet of 350grm organic paper 18.5×26.5 inch. Mainly artgrafs and some white acrylic paint. it was part of a larger piece that was 4 full sheets taped together. Done last Spring workshop with Sara. Chasing light shadows.  See wix post

Because of New Year I was not present on second meeting. In the recording Sara mentioned that my sketches reminded her of the Japanese term Komorebi, dappled, filtered light that shines through trees.

  1. Carol, my hat is off to you in bringing poetry into your blog posts! “New Year” is both self-explanatory and open to personal interpretation, and its repeated line of “just going with the usual motions” has so many possible interpretations! My hat is also off to you in re-energizing your creative art practice and blogging about your adventures in that realm! Thanks for sharing Sara’s mention of your work’s reminding her of the Japanese term komorebi—I love that she had that term at hand to identify a feature of your nature scribbles, and I’m happy to be introduced to the term myself : )

    1. Thanks for your feedback on my poetry! As for bringing them on my blog, had a good teacher and example! Sara somehow brings me into a different mindset. It’s not about finished works, but more about process and seeing. I also didn’t know of that term. Found some interesting videos on his channel. My daughter and 2 sons are going to Japan on Sunday for about 16 days.

  2. So wonderful, Carol! All of the sketches. I really love the first one. It brought to mind a favorite willow tree. It is at the entrance to our neighborhood, and it is very tall. Sort of stands guard, and greets you. LOL. Happy New Year! Yum, apple pie!

  3. Your poem touches me deeply…this time of year is so hard for so many. And the art! Whoa! Thanks for teaching me a new word, and for sharing the freedom of sketches and art graf and landscapes! Sending hugs and love xo

    1. Thanks Lola, yes difficult and I don’t see the end. My art is what keeps me sane! Thanks for your feedback and hugs! xo xo xo
